The basic electrical characteristic of a thermistor is that its resistance value changes with temperature, and the temperature of the thermistor itself will change due to self heating caused by the surrounding temperature or current passing through the thermistor. In temperature measurement, control, and compensation applications, it is required that the self consumption power of the thermistor be maintained at a least to avoid self heating. When the ambient temperature remains constant, the resistance of the thermistor is a function of its self consumed power, and the temperature of the thermistor rises above the ambient temperature.
Under certain working conditions, the temperature can increase by 100-200 ℃, and the resistance can decrease to one thousandth of the resistance value under low current conditions. In some application fields, the self heating characteristics of thermistors can be utilized. In the self heating state, the thermistor is thermally sensitive to any condition that changes the thermal conductivity of the thermistor. If the heat dissipation rate can be ideally fixed, the thermistor is sensitive to power input. Therefore, the thermistor is suitable for voltage level or power level control applications.
